Class 3 2018 - 2019

Mr Fowler

A big welcome back to the last part of the Autumn Term. Here are some forthcoming dates for your diary:

7th November – Fluenz in for Year 3 pupils

2nd December – Christmas Fayre

12th December – Christmas dinner

13th December – Key Stage 2 trip to New Vic Theatre

18th December – Year 3&4 Christmas party (party clothes)

20th December – Last day of term

7th January – Return to school

This half-term, the children will be studying two fiction books; ‘Stone Age Boy’ and   ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’. They will be writing stories based on the same structure as these books. During the ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’ unit, there will be a couple of lessons were we will watch some of the film adaptation to compare the similarities and differences between the book and the film. The film has a PG rating so if any parent is not happy for their child to watch the DVD, please can you let me know by Friday 23rd November.

The children will be spending the first few weeks learning about addition and subtraction, with particular focus on the column method. They will then move on to multiplication and division concentrating on the 3, 4 and 8 times tables.

In Science, the children will be learning about soils and rocks. This will include learning about erupting volcanoes, testing hardness of rock samples and understanding the fossilisation process. The children will also receive a three week science homework project based on the subject.

The children will be learning about the Stone Age and looking at how life changed for the people when they moved into the Iron Age.

With there being no Forest Schools for Year 3 this half-term, PE lessons will take place twice a week. On Wednesdays, with Mr Gibbons, the children will be learning about basketball. On Fridays, I will be taking the children through indoor athletics skills followed by cross country. For both sessions, I would recommend that the children wear trainers and, in case of cold weather, a tracksuit top or a hoodie.

French lessons with Mrs Hayes will start this half-term on Wednesday afternoons.

Both Literacy and Numeracy homework will continue to be sent home on Fridays and returned back by Wednesday the following week. Spellings, which do not need to be handed in, will be handed out on the Tuesday ready for the test on the following Monday. If your child misplaces their spelling sheet, you will find it on the school website from the Wednesday ready for you to download.

If there are any questions, please don’t hesitate to come in and see me.
