Spring half term 2

Welcome back! It was so lovely to see the children back in school this week and their smiley faces as they met and played with their friends for the first time in a while! The buzz from the classroom was really special and the party on the first day back was definitely a success!

We will be working on settling back into routines and re-establishing friendships over the next few weeks. We will supporting the children to adapt to the classroom environment again as well as finding out what they have retained. With this in mind, our topic for the rest of this half term is called “Paws, Claws and Whiskers”.

In Literacy, we will begin by reading “Pig the Pug” by Aaron Blabey. We will continue to reinforce correct letter formation by sitting our letters on the lines with clear ascenders and descenders which the children have worked so hard at at home. We will also reinforce the children’s understanding of sentences and gradually build back their independence and stamina to write in a classroom setting.

In Art, we will be learning to sketch animals using simple shapes before creating our own pet collages in the style of Denise Fiedler, using different types of paper.

In Science, we will be identifying mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish. We will think about the needs of different pets and become familiar with the terms carnivore, herbivore and omnivore.

We will continue with the pet theme in Computing lessons by creating our own games using the Sketch Nation app.

In Topic lessons, we will learn about our local area and use Google Earth to compare our adventure playground and the park.

In PE, our focus will be gymnastics on Tuesdays and throwing a catching on Fridays. For gymnastic lessons, which will be in the hall, the children will need to wear pumps or be in bare feet in order to feel and grip the equipment. Throwing and catching lessons will require trainers. Please could you be aware that for health and safety reasons, earrings must be removed or covered during PE lessons and we will be coming into school in our PE kits on PE days as we are still not getting changed at school at the moment.

In Numeracy, we will be finding out what the children have retained for the first couple of weeks before developing their knowledge of place value, addition and subtraction further with bigger numbers.

RE will focus on the Easter Story and how Christians prepare for and celebrate this time of year.

Homework will continue to be practical and fun. It will be set on a Friday and is due to be uploaded on to Tapestry by Wednesday of the following week which I know we are all well-practised at now!

Thank you for your continued support with your children’s reading. It has been wonderful to see the children really begin to develop a love for books! Remember little and often is best! Reading to your child and talking about stories is also beneficial and develops their vocabulary and knowledge of books, especially when they are tired after a busy day! Any time snuggling up with a book and practising keyring words is time well spent!

I hope this is helpful and look forward to settling back into routines this half term! Please do not hesitate to pop in and see me if you have any questions or queries. My door is always open! I will always do my best to sort out any worries, no matter what they are! My email address is

Kind regards,

Mrs Bradley
