Class 1 2019 - 2020
Spring half term 2
Welcome back with the happy news that Tom Hughes was born at 4.13am on 15th February, weighing 8lb 3oz and was home for 7am! Mrs Hughes is enjoying herself at home with her boys now and we all wish them a happy time together!
I am now teaching Year 1 full-time and this half-term, our topic is called “Paws, Claws and Whiskers”.
In Literacy, we will begin by reading “Oi Dog!” by Kes Gray and “Pig the Pug” by Aaron Blabey. We will continue to develop our independence to write a sequence of sentences with capital letters and full stops as well as reinforce correct letter formation by sitting our letters on the lines with clear ascenders and descenders. We will also be using the story of “Winnie the Witch” and her pet cat, Wilbur during World Book Week which this year at Highfields has a magical theme!
In Art, we will be learning to sketch animals using simple shapes before creating our own pet collages in the style of Denise Fiedler, using different types of paper.
In Science, we will be identifying mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish. We will think about the needs of different pets and become familiar with the terms carnivore, herbivore and omnivore.
We will continue with the pet theme in Computing lessons by creating our own games using the Sketch Nation app.
In Topic lessons, we will learn about our local area and use Google Earth to compare our adventure playground and the park.
In PE, our focus will be sports hall athletics on Mondays to develop our running, jumping and throwing skills. Please could you also ensure that all uniform is labelled and checked regularly and be aware that for health and safety reasons, earrings must be removed or covered during PE lessons? We will also be taking part in a cricket festival on Tuesday 17th March at South Cheshire College ( Details to follow ).
We are lucky to have Forest School on Wednesday afternoons with Miss Garner this half-term during my PPA time. For these sessions, the children will need warm, waterproof clothing with two pairs of socks and wellies as they will be outside, whatever the weather!
In Numeracy, the children will be learning more about addition and subtraction, place value and then moving onto measuring.
RE will focus on features of spring and new life before learning about the Easter Story and how Christians prepare for and celebrate this time of year.
Homework will continue to be practical and fun and will be given out on a Friday. Please could you check that folders are in the children’s school bags so that they can be handed in on or before Wednesday of the following week?
Thank you for your continued support with your children’s reading. Reading regularly really does make a difference and helps to develop fluency, understanding and decoding skills. As a school, we recommend reading at least three times a week and recording this in the reading diaries.
We will be having a Year 1 phonics meeting to share strategies and alleviate any worries about the Year 1 Phonics Check which takes place in June on Monday 9th March at 3.45pm.
I hope this is helpful and look forward to an action-packed half term! Please do not hesitate to pop in and see me if you have any questions or queries. My door is always open! I will always do my best to sort out any worries, no matter what they are!
