Class 1 2020 - 2021
Year 1 Spring term 1
Happy New Year!
I hope that you have had a wonderful Christmas and made lots of special memories. Thank you so much for such thoughtful Christmas presents. I absolutely loved them and Tilly did too!
This half term, our topic is ‘Terrific Toys’ which I am sure the children will enjoy!
In Literacy, we will read a range of stories to inspire our writing including “That Rabbit Belongs to Emily Brown” by Cressida Cowell, “The Everywhere Bear” by Julia Donaldson, “Whatever Next” by Jill Murphy and “Toys in Space” by Mini Grey. We will continue to work on letter formation, sitting our “descenders” on the lines with their tails hanging below and checking our “ascenders” like b.d,h,k,l and t are taller. We will be developing our independence to write a sequence of sentences with capital letters and full stops, continue to use our phonic sounds to help spell new words and read our own work out loud to check that it makes sense.
In Topic lessons, we will begin by describing our favourite toys. We will then compare our toys with those of parents and grandparents, contrast old and new toys of the same type and order similar toys on to a timeline to show how they have changed over time.
Our Science lessons will involve investigating different materials and making games using magnets.
In Design and Technology, we will be looking at properties of materials in order to design and make our own kites.
Numeracy lessons will develop our knowledge of place value, addition and subtraction this half term and I will send home games or provide links to on-line apps to reinforce our classwork. Thank you for uploading your homework on to Tapestry. It really is lovely to share in your learning! Please make sure you are regularly accessing Tapestry as this is the platform we are using in Key Stage 1 for home learning as well as how we would set work if you are isolating or there are future school closures. Homework as before will be set on Fridays and is due to be uploaded on to Tapestry by Wednesday of the following week.
The children will be using programmable toys called Bee-Bots in Computing lessons as well as apps on the iPads to find out about coding. We will also be learning a little about Internet Safety in preparation for Internet Safety Day on Tuesday 9th February.
There will be two sessions of PE on Monday afternoons this half-term with Mr Gibbons. Mrs Bradley and Mr Gibbons will be developing the children’s gymnastic skills and ability to roll, jump, climb and move in different ways on low level equipment before making simple sequences. For gymnastic lessons, which will be in the hall, the children will need to wear pumps or be in bare feet in order to feel and grip the equipment. Our other session will focus on improving our co-ordination and throwing and catching skills through simple games. Throwing and catching lessons will require trainers. Please could you be aware that for health and safety reasons, earrings must be removed or covered during PE lessons and we will be coming into school in our PE kits on Mondays as we are not getting changed at school.
R.E, Music and French will be taught by Mrs Hayes on Thursday afternoons during Mrs Bradley’s PPA time.
Thank you very much for your continued support with your children’s reading. It has been wonderful to see the children progress and really begin to develop a love for books! Remember little and often is best! Reading to your child and talking about stories is also beneficial and develops their vocabulary and knowledge of books, especially when they are tired after a busy day! Any time snuggling up with a book and practising keyring words is time well spent!
