Class 1 2019 - 2020

Mrs Hughes

Mrs Bradley

Year 1 ( Autumn half term 2 )

We hope that you’ve all had a great break and are nice and refreshed after a fantastic first half-term in Year One! Our trip to Delamere Forest was a really enjoyable day and the children were an absolute credit to you all!

This half term, as it is definitely getting colder, we will be learning about the South Pole and then, with Christmas on the way, the North Pole, where you-know-who and reindeer live!

To inspire our writing in Literacy, we will begin with “Snowball” by Sue Hendra before moving on to ”Lost and Found” by Oliver Jeffers and “The Polar Express” by Chris van Allsburg. We will be continuing to use “leading lines” when forming our letters and positioning them correctly on the lines with tails hanging below. We will be developing our understanding of capital letters and full stops as well as extending our descriptions using imaginative adjectives and verbs.

In Topic lessons, we will be learning about where the North and South Poles are. We will first find out about the features of Antarctica and polar explorers, before comparing and contrasting this part of the world with the Arctic.

In Art, we will be learning about colour mixing using pastels and creating beautiful landscapes of the Northern Lights ( aurora borealis ) or Southern Lights ( aurora australis ). In DT, we will be designing and making our own Christmas themed snacks.

Our Science lessons will be based around the theme of Ourselves and we will be learning all about our senses.

Our Numeracy lessons will focus on addition and subtraction, and as before we will be sending home lots of lovely games for you to play or setting on-line homework on MyMaths.

In Music, we will be learning our songs for the Christmas Play, which this year is called “Ralph the Reindeer” and takes place on Wednesday 11th December at 2pm and 6pm.

( Details and tickets to follow ).

PE this half-term will be on a Friday with Mrs Bradley and Mr Gibbons due to play rehearsals. We will be continuing to develop the children’s co-ordination and spatial awareness through multi-skills but perhaps extend this with equipment such as hockey sticks! The children will require trainers for all PE lessons this half term. Please could you ensure that all uniform is labelled and checked regularly and be aware that for health and safety reasons, earrings must be removed or covered during PE lessons.

R.E. will be taught by Mrs Walker during the last lesson on Thursdays during Mrs Bradley’s PPA time and will focus on Christmas.

Thank you for your support so far hearing the children read. The reading pets have proved very popular! It is very important that the children continue to read regularly at home in order to develop their fluency and sight recognition as well as a love for books. Little and often is best! Reading to your child and talking about stories is also beneficial and develops their vocabulary as well as ability to understand texts and empathise with characters. Please look at the questions attached and on our class website page to help with this.

We look forward to another wonderful half-term at this magical time of year which will be extremely busy as well as exciting! If you have any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to contact us. Our door is always open!
