Class 1 2018 - 2019

Mrs Hughes

Mrs Bradley

Happy New Year!

We hope that you’ve had a wonderful Christmas and made lots of special memories.  Thank you so much for our thoughtful Christmas presents.  We absolutely loved them.

Our Topic for the next half term is ‘Terrific Toys’.

In Topic lessons, we will begin having a “Teddy Bears’ Picnic” and describing our toys. We will then compare our toys with those of parents and grandparents, contrast old and new toys of the same type before ordering similar toys on to a timeline to show how they have changed over time. We may also visit Nantwich Museum to handle a variety of toys from the past. (Details to follow).

In Design and Technology, we will learn to make moving pictures and toys using levers and pivots.

In Literacy, we will begin by reading “Kipper’s Toybox” by Mick Inkpen and “That Rabbit Belongs to Emily Brown” by Cressida Cowell before moving on to "Toys in Space" by Mini Grey and "The Everywhere Bear" by Julia Donaldson. We will continue to work on letter formation using “leading lines” and will be developing our independence to write a sequence of sentences with capital letters and full stops. We will also introduce weekly reading skills sessions to develop our understanding of texts and extend our vocabulary.

Our Science lessons will be based around materials and we will be investigating different materials and making games using magnets.

Numeracy will be based around addition and subtraction to begin with and then we will be moving onto shape.

In Music, we will be singing lots of songs and playing rhythm games.

In Computing, the children will be using programmable toys called Bee-Bots as well as apps on the iPads to find out about coding.  We will also be learning a little about Internet Safety in preparation for Internet Safety Day on 5th February.

PE will be on Mondays and Fridays this half-term.  On Mondays, Mrs Hughes will be dancing with the children. On Fridays, Mrs Bradley will be developing the children’s gymnastic skills and ability to roll, jump, climb and move in different ways on low level equipment before making simple sequences.  For both PE lessons, which will be in the hall, the children will need to wear pumps or be in bare feet. Please could you ensure that all uniform is labelled and checked regularly and be aware that for health and safety reasons, earrings must be removed or covered during PE lessons.

R.E. as well as French will be taught by Mrs Hayes on Wednesday afternoons after lunch during Mrs Bradley’s PPA time.

Thank you very much for your continued support with your children’s reading. Remember little and often is best to establish good reading habits and a love for books! Reading to your child and talking about stories is also beneficial and develops their vocabulary and knowledge of books, especially when they are tired after a busy day! Any time snuggling up with a book is time well spent!

If you have any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to contact us. Our door is always open!
