Class 1 2021 - 2022

Mrs Hughes

Mrs Bradley

Year 1

( Autumn half term 1 )

Welcome back to Highfields!  We can’t wait to meet you properly and hear about all of your adventures. Miss Garner has told us lots about you so please do not worry. We have lots of exciting activities planned so we are sure we will have lots of fun!

All you need to bring to school each day is a coat (in case it rains), a water bottle, a healthy snack for breaktime, a lunchbox (if you are not having a school lunch) and your book bag which will be stored in your tray. ( If you still have any school books at home, please could you return them in a plastic bag?)

Our first topic in Year 1 will be “Into the Woods”.

In Literacy, we will start by using “Stick Man”. Our main focus over the first few weeks will be to form our letters correctly. We will also be reinforcing finger spaces between words and learning about what a sentence is.

In Topic lessons, we will be finding out about our new surroundings. We will use the iPads to take photographs and find Stick Man using simple maps.

In Art, we will learn how to create bark and leaf rubbings before creating textured collages of Stick Man’s family tree and our own versions of Stick Man. We will also use our school grounds to make natural sculptures like Andy Goldsworthy.

Our Science lessons will be based around Seasonal Changes and we will be going outside to investigate the weather. We will also look at how we can look after our school environment, create rules for a happy classroom and learn about our feelings and emotions in Life Education lessons. In R.E. lessons, we will develop our ideas about God  and learn about him by listening to parables like “The Lost Sheep”.

Our Numeracy lessons will begin by focusing on sorting, counting and one more and one less.  We really want the learning in year 1 to be fun so sometimes we will send games home as the homework. With the games, there is nothing for you to record and they don’t have to be sent back to school, we just want you to enjoy numbers and play and practise at home together.

PE will be on a Tuesday in Year 1 this half-term with a range of multi-skills lessons to develop co-ordination and spatial awareness which Mr Gibbons will be teaching. On Tuesdays, please come into school in your uniform and we will be changing into our PE kits at the start of the lesson. If PE kits could be in school on Monday each week that would be helpful in case plans change for any reason. We will send PE kits home each Friday so that they can be washed. Please make sure that all clothes are labelled. For health and safety reasons, earrings must be removed or covered during PE lessons.

We are lucky this half term to have Forest School with Miss Garner (Mrs Cooper now) on Wednesday afternoons which will reinforce our work on the woods and trees. Forest School will take place outside whatever the weather so please could you come into school wearing old clothes on these days like leggings, trousers or jumpers that you don’t mind getting dirty as well as a waterproof coat. You can wear trainers or shoes and then bring appropriate footwear to change into. However, we do not have the space for storing them in the classroom so these will be sent home each week.

Homework will be posted on Tapestry on a Friday and should be completed by the Wednesday of the following week. Homework can be shared and uploaded onto Tapestry but we will also provide paper copies for you. It is very important that you continue to read regularly at home to help you read more smoothly and recognise words by sight quickly. Little and often is best! Listening to stories and talking about them is also fantastic to develop your love for books, especially when you are tired after a busy day!

We hope this is helpful and look forward to working with you all.

Kind regards,

Mrs Hughes (Mondays and Tuesdays) and Mrs Bradley (Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays)
