Summer half term 2

Welcome back to our very last half term together! The year has really flown by and we hope the children have enjoyed their time in Year 1 as much as we have! They have been an amazing class to teach and we will definitely miss them all next year!

Below we have outlined some of the activities that we will be undertaking this half term:

Our new topic for this half-term will have a nautical theme and is called “Yo ho ho!”. We will begin by looking at the seaside before moving on to pirates. In Literacy, our focus will be non-fiction and writing reports about sea creatures and pirates. We will be trying hard to form all of our letters correctly with “leading lines” in preparation for Year 2 when the children will start to join their writing consistently. We will also be writing independently using clear sentences with full stops, capital letters and connectives and re-reading our work to check it makes sense.

In Topic lessons, we will learn about the coast and key features of seasides. We will be finding out how seaside holidays have changed over the years using family photographs.  With this in mind, it would be lovely if you could find photographs of your children, as well as yourselves and grandparents at the beach when children for us to compare and contrast. We will also be developing our mapping skills and knowledge of co-ordinates.

In Art, we will be focusing on printing in order to create life-size pirate portraits. We will be making healthy seaside summer snacks in DT lessons during our whole school well-being week which begins on Monday 25th June and includes a “Sugar Shocker” workshop with KiddyCook. We may also design and make our own kites!

In PE, we will initially be developing our athletic skills on Tuesdays and Fridays in preparation for Sports’ Day which takes place on Friday 21st June ( Reserve day Friday 12th July ) before moving on to summer games such as kickball and rounders. The children will require trainers for both PE sessions and Sports’ Day as well as water bottles! Please could you check that your child’s footwear fits properly and will not fall off with Sports’ Day in mind?

In Science, we will be identifying and classifying plants and animals. We have organised a trip to Bickley Farm on Monday 8th July, where we will be pond dipping and finding out about creatures of the night! Details to follow!

In ICT, we will be learning how to use Pic Collage.  We will also re-visit some of our favourite apps from throughout the year and learn a little about Internet Safety.  The children will also be set a homework to interact with the school website via a blog.

Music will involve more singing and learning how to use the hand chimes.  We will be playing lots of fun rhythm games too.

In Numeracy, we will be continuing to learn about multiplication and division and then moving onto fractions.

During Mrs Bradley’s PPA time on Wednesday afternoons, Mrs Cooke will be teaching the children RE.

The children will also receive three PHSE lessons this half term as part of the whole school Christopher Winter project. In Year 1, the children will learn about growing and changing, keeping clean and begin to name male and female body parts.

We hope this is helpful and gives you an insight into our topics this half term! Thank you very much for all your support and encouragement so far. The children have all come such a long way and we will endeavour to help make their transition into Year 2 as smooth as possible. Please do not hesitate to come to see us if you have any questions. Our door is always open!

NB. From September, due to the small size of the Year 2 classroom and cloakroom, bookbags, which fit in trays, and draw-string PE bags, which can be hung neatly on pegs, would be preferred to rucksacks for health and safety reasons. Any rucksacks can be re-used again in Key Stage 2.
