Class 2 2018 - 2019

Miss Addis

Welcome back!

First of all, I would like to wish you all a Happy New Year and a huge thank you for all your lovely gifts. I was overwhelmed by your generosity. I hope you all had a restful and relaxing Christmas and are all set for the new half term ahead. I am looking forward to hearing about all your Christmas stories and about the presents that you all received from Father Christmas.

Before I inform you about our learning for this term, I wanted to say how proud I am of all your achievements from the last term, notably your superb nativity performance. As a class, you’ve made some huge improvements, which will surely continue into this term.

Below, I have included some key information regarding this next half term in year 2;

Numeracy lessons will be based on broadening our knowledge of Measurement and Money, Multiplication and Division, then Properties of Shapes. We will first be looking at counting money, recognising the different coins, pounds and notes and making the same amounts but using different coins/pounds/notes. We will then move onto finding the total and the different between of amounts, giving change and moving onto 2 step worded problems. Within our Multiplication and Division learning, we will be reinforcing our learning of the 2,5 and 10 times tables, using the X and ÷ symbols and understanding their meaning.  In year 2, we are aiming to keep Numeracy practical and engaging, so in some weeks I may send home numeracy games for homework.

In Literacy, we will continue our story the Bear and Piano from last half term which the children have loved learning about so far. We will begin by becoming authors and writing our own retells of the story. We will then move onto another book, called The Grotlyn. We will be working hard on developing our reading comprehension skills whilst focusing on this book.

In Topic lessons, will become more familiar with the surroundings of London. We have done some work already on the city. However, now we will be going back in time developing our history skills looking at the Great Fire of London. Within this topic, we will be completing some exciting Design and Technology work creating our own moving vehicle. At a later date, I will be sending a letter out asking for donations of boxes to create our vehicles.

Our Science lessons will focus on the children learning about everyday materials including wood, plastic, metal, water and rock. They will be able to identify and name everyday materials and will have the opportunity to explore the properties of these materials by conducting a range of investigations.

PE will be on a Wednesday and a Friday in year 2 this half-term. On Wednesday’s Mr Gibbons will be teaching us Gymnastics, therefore only bare feet or pumps can be worn. Please make sure you still have trainers for our lesson on Friday. Please could you ensure that all uniform is labelled and checked regularly in case names wear away. For health and safety reasons, earrings must be removed or covered during PE lessons.

R.E. as well as French will be taught by Mrs Hayes and Mrs Cooke on Tuesday afternoon’s for this half term during Miss Addis’ PPA time.

Homework, as last term, will be given out on a Friday and is due in by the Wednesday of the following week. In addition, spellingsof keywords will be given out on a Tuesday ready for a test on the following Monday (this is a format which is used throughout the school).

It is very important that the children continue to read regularly at home, as this builds up their fluency and will continue to build on their comprehension skills. Please remember to record any reading completed at home in your child/children’s reading diary.  To develop your child/children’s thirst for books, reading to your child and discussing stories develops their range of vocabulary and their love for books.

I hope this is helpful. If you have any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to ask. My door is always open.

Kind Regards,

Miss Addis
