Class 2 2018 - 2019

Miss Addis

Welccome back!

I hope you all had a lovely and restful holiday. I am looking forward to hearing about all your adventures. This half term, is particuarly busy, as we numerous exciting events coming up. First off, we are busing practising our nativity play called Christmas with the Aliens. Next we have our pantomime visit, Santa's Sparkly Surprise and our annual christmas trip. This year we are going to Tatton Park.

Below, I have included some key information regarding the second half term;

Numeracy lessons will be based on broadening our knowledge of place value. We will first be looking at reading and writing numbers to 100, in words and numerals. We will then move onto recognising numbers and understanding the composition of two digit and even three digit numbers. In year 2, we are aiming to keep Numeracy practical and engaging, so in some weeks I may send home numeracy games for homework.

In Literacy, we will start by focusing on traditional tales. We will explore the brilliant fables, The Frog and the Scorpion and The Ant and the Grasshopper. Within this we will write a dialogue between grasshopper's indignant sister and the cruel ant, delving deep into sentence composition and develop our storytelling skills.

In Topic lessons, we will become more familiar with surroundings of Nantwich and the British Isles. We will be using a range of equipment such as iPads, maps, atlases and globes to broaden our geographical knowledge. We will be using some great apps such as Google Earth and Pic Collage to help us complete our work.

Our Science lessons will focus on the children learning about a variety of habitats and the plants and animals that live there. They will learn to tell the difference between things that are living, dead and things that have never been alive, and apply this in a range of contexts. Along the way, they will make observations of a local habitat and the creatures that live there, investigating conditions in local microhabitats and how they affect the minibeasts found within them.

PE will be on a Tuesday and a Friday in year 2 this half-term.  As one of our PE lessons will be held outside once a week, the children will require trainers. Trainers or pumps can be worn for indoor games such as Benchball. Later in the year, pumps or bare feet are required for gymnastics or dance. Please could you ensure that all uniform is labelled and checked regularly in case names wear away. For health and safety reasons, earrings must be removed or covered during PE lessons.

R.E. as well as French and Phonics will be taught by Mrs Hayes on Wednesday mornings until lunch time during Miss Addis’ PPA time.

Homework, as in year 1, will be given out on a Friday and is due in by the Wednesday of the following week. In addition, spellings of keywords will be given out on a Tuesday ready for a test on the following Monday (this is a format which is used throughout the school). It is very important that the children continue to read regularly at home, as this builds up their fluency and will continue to build on their comprehension skills. Please remember to record any reading completed at home in your child/children’s reading diary.  To develop your child/children’s thirst for books, reading to your child and discussing stories develops their range of vocabulary and their love for books.

I hope this is helpful. If you have any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to ask. My door is always open.

Kind Regards,

Miss Addis
