Welcome to our website

Class 2 2019 - 2020

Miss Addis

Welcome back!

Wow! What a busy first half term we had in year 2! I hope that you all had a fun but restful break, all ready to start another exciting half term. This half term, we will be practising our Christmas play called ‘Ralph the Reindeer’. All Year 2 children received their play parts at the end of the last half term, ready to hit the ground running to start practising as we return. I can’t wait to get started and to put on a great show for you all!

In Literacy this half term, we will be focusing on the book called ‘The King of the Birds’ by Helen Ward. Within the story, the birds decide who should be the King of the Birds? The biggest bird? The fastest? The one with the longest beak? Only a competition can decide… but who will be winner? We will be concentrating on the different types of birds within the story, extending our knowledge of local birds and birds which are found in other counties. We will be writing poetry based on the rhyme in the poem ‘Socks’ by Colin West but we’ll  be writing our own version but about birds. Further on in the half term, we will be looking at the features of non-chorological reports and writing our own about Eagles. These are just some of the exciting examples which we will be doing in literacy this half term.

Last half term, we work hard on place value and started our addition and subtraction unit of work. We will be continuing on this, specifically concentrating on adding and subtracting tens and multiple of tens, adding a 2 digit number to a one and two digit number (crossing the tens barrier), subtracting a one/two digit number from a two digit number (crossing the tens barrier). We will be looking at completing these calculations using practical methods using dienes and pictorial methods, for example: number lines and the tens and ones method.

PE will be on a Wednesday and a Friday this half-term. PE lessons will be held outside once a week, the children will require to wear trainers for these lessons. Trainers or pumps can be worn for indoor PE lessons such as Benchball. Later in the year, pumps or bare feet are required for gymnastics or dance. Please could you ensure that all uniform is labelled and checked regularly in case names wear away. For health and safety reasons, earrings must be removed or covered during PE lessons.

For this half term, Miss Addis’ PPA time will be on Tuesday afternoons. During this time Mrs Hayes and Mrs Walker will be teaching Year 2.

Homework, like last half term, will be given out on a Friday and is due in by the Wednesday of the following week. From the start of this half term, spellings will be given out. This year, spelling key words will be linked to handwriting and class literacy work. Handwriting books will go home on a Wednesday with spelling words inside, and need to be back in school for the following Monday with the spelling words complete. A letter and more guidance of about this will be handed out on Wednesday.

It is very important that the children continue to read regularly at home, as this builds up their fluency and will continue to build on their comprehension skills. Please remember to record any reading completed at home in your child/children’s reading diary.  To develop your child/children’s thirst for books, reading to your child and discussing stories develops their range of vocabulary and their love for books.

I hope this is helpful. If you have any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to ask. My door is always open.

Kind Regards,

Miss Addis
