Class 2 2018 - 2019

Miss Addis

Welcome back!

I hope you all had a wonderful Easter holidays. I can’t believe that we are in the final term of year 2! This year has flown by and will continue to do so, as this is the busiest half term for us.

In Numeracy, we will be initially focusing on shape. The children will be broadening their knowledge of 2D and 3D shapes. They will be able to name and describe properties of 2-D and 3-D shapes, including number of sides, vertices, edges, faces and lines of symmetry. We will then continue our mathematical journey onto fractions. By the end of the unit, the children will be able to identify 1/4, 1/3 , 1/2 , 2/4 , 3/4 , of a number or shape, and know that all parts must be equal parts of the whole

Additionally, across the next few weeks, we will be focusing on telling the time. In year 2, it is required to tell the time in 15 minute intervals, o’clock, quarter past, half past and quarter to. Therefore, over the next few weeks, I would be very grateful if you could involve these elements into your day to day conversations at home. If you really want a challenge, you can try 5 minute intervals!

Literacy this half term, we will continue our work on the book ‘The Grotlyn’ by Benji Davies. All the children have loved this book so far and they have all produced some wonderful pieces of writing. However, we are yet to find out the identity of the Grotlyn, I wonder who he/she is?!

In Science, the children will closely study plants and trees in the natural environment, taking measurements and making observational drawings. We will also plant a seed and a bulb and compare them as they grow. They record changes in their plants in words and pictures, take measurements throughout the unit and finally draw bar charts to show the growth of the two plants. Also we will set up a comparative experiment to observe what plants need to grow well, and watch the germination process first hand by growing cress. Additionally, we will begin to learn about plants we eat, and understand that farming involves creating the right conditions for food crops to grow.

This half term, Year 2 will be taking part in Forest School with Miss Garner on Wednesday afternoons. Please ensure that children bring in a suitable Forest School kit for this time. This may include, tracksuit bottoms, t-shirt/long sleeve top, jumper, waterproof coat, outdoor shoes (walking shoes/wellies/trainers), extra socks, gloves and hat/sunhat (depending on weather). The children will be completing Forest School in most weather conditions, so please ensure that your child is dressed appropriately. We will also have a PE lesson every Tuesday afternoon. Please have an appropriate kit as we will be outside.

Homework, as last term, will be given out on a Friday and is due in by the Wednesday of the following week.

It is very important that the children continue to read regularly at home, as this builds up their fluency and will continue to build on their comprehension skills. Please remember to record any reading completed at home in your child/children’s reading diary.  To develop your child/children’s thirst for books, reading to your child and discussing stories develops their range of vocabulary and their love for books.

Finally, I wanted say a huge thank you for all the additional support that you are giving at home. I really appreciate all the time and effort you are putting in. I am definitely seeing all your hard work coming to fruition in the classroom. Please can you continue this support.

If you have any questions, please feel do not hesitate to ask. My door is always open.

Kind Regards,

Miss Addis
